Day: 79-degrees | Night: 63-degrees
A wee small shower falling lightly upon the Garden as we stepped outside on this cloudy, rainy Tuesday morning. The Doodle Dog and I were able to squeeze an abbreviated walk in before the rains got a bit heavier. We'll head out again this afternoon, of course. She is also headed to see her bestest friend Maggie @thematteddoodle this afternoon for her monthly Spa Day so that will be a lovely thing. It's wonderful to feel the rain and smell the earth on a day like today. It just reminds me why I love gardening. Fall is the season of changes. It reminds you of that every day with each leaf that turns and then, slowly, dies and drifts down to become compost for next year's growth. It simply makes you marvel and the way this earth is created to constantly renew itself. It does keep me filled with Hope. Rain and clouds this morning with the clouds hanging around the rest of the day. Winds are out of the South at 10 to 15 MPH. It's a day of much needed showers. I hope it keeps coming for a while. I wish you a bit of Hope as well on this Cloudy, Rainy Tuesday. We could all use a bit of hope. Well, that's all the news from the Carondelet Garden.

It was the perfect Fall weekend in Saint Louis. Today is looking pretty amazing as well. It should be a Magical Monday for this old Gardener and Dr. B as we head out with the little one to the Zoo and the Science Center for a day of fun and adventure. It's good to see the world through the eyes of a child. It gives us the hope we need. It should be the perfect day for outdoor adventures. Abundant sunshine with winds out of the SSW at 5 to 10 MPH. I hope you have a Magical Monday as well. Have a bit of faith, spread some hope and share some love. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 73-degrees | Night: 45-degrees
It's a bit of a Slow-Down Sunday around the Garden today. It's been a really busy week both mentally and physically. We are ready for a true day of rest. We slept in and even the little Doodle Dog had a lie in. It was quite lovely. Now it's a cup of hot tea and a biscuit and the newspaper and, if we get truly radical, we will tackle the @NYTimes Sunday crossword puzzle. Another beautiful day on tap for South Saint Louis with bright sunshine and winds out of the WSW at 5 to 10 MPH. A lovely day to hang out and relax. I hope you get that opportunity. A chance to recharge your batteries and rest. Be good to yourself this Sunday. Kindness matters to others but also to yourself. That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden. Day: 63-degrees | Night: 36-degrees [FROST ADVISORY]
It's another Soccer Saturday for us. We are heading out in just a few to watch our little buddy play, what we lovingly refer to as, Ant Ball. They all run around like ants following the ball. Not a lot of strategy but a whole lot of pure energy and joy. There is something to be said for that kind of child-like glee. You must become like a little child. It certainly brings a smile to my face watching them have that much fun chasing a little round ball and trying to kick it or head butt it into a net. It's a bit of a chilly start to today but the sun is shing brightly and the winds are light and variable. A great Fall Day for soccer or any other outdoor activity. Here's hoping you get a chance to get outside and let the sun shine on your face. I hope you can experience a little joy this weekend. You deserve all the joy and happiness you can get! That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 64-degrees | Night: 36-degrees [FROST ADVISORY]
It's the first Friday in October and already we have our first Frost Advisory of this Fall. According to the "Old Farmer's Almanac" on average our first frost doesn't arrive until the second half of the month. This has been a crazy year weatherwise. We may get snow before the end of the month. Some of the flowers are still hanging in there. I will be working to protect a few just in case there is a frost tonight. It's all about change and adaptation around here. Being a gardener keeps you on your toes because you never know what you will be dealing with. It's going to be cooler today with Sunny skies and winds out of the North at 10 to 15 MPH. It's Friday and the weekend is upon us. Here's to restful, relaxing weekend! Be good and kind to yourself and others as you venture out and about our fair burg this weekend. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 80-degrees | Night: 50-degrees
It's Thirsty Thursday! We will be meeting up with some friends for Mexican food and Margaritas this evening. It's always fun to catch up with folks. It's been a busy week for this old man but not enough of it spent in the Garden. I need to change that in the next few days. I do have some new grow lights for the basement to help with overwintering some plants. They will go in tomorrow along with trimming some hanging baskets in preparation. Exciting times but a bit sad as the growing season outside is quickly coming to an end. That's just the way it is. You just have to accept some things and move on. It's another beautiful sunny day in South Saint Louis. Winds are out of the N@ at 10 to 15 MPH. A few changes on the horizon as the temps begin to cool off quite a bit for the weekend. Just in time for Soccer games on Saturday. Here's to a lovely Thirsty Thursday. I hope you get to sit back and enjoy an adult beverage this evening. Relax a little if you can. You deserve it! That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 79-degrees | Night: 54-degrees
The Rosemary is hanging in this Fall here in the Carondelet Garden. Dr. B makes an amazing Rosemary Bread and, of course, she uses it in a variety of other dishes, so it always goes to good use. The Basil and some of the other Herbs have been pulled and composted. It's Fall after all. It's the middle of the week and the chores seem to keep piling up. My list just keeps getting longer. It's that time of year to finish up those little outside projects that you need to get done before Winter's winds begin to blow and the skies turn to snow! It won't be that long. That's the scary part! Today is beautiful. Sunshine and breezes out of the South at 5 to 10 MPH. Here's to another beautiful day. Get outside and let the sun put a smile on your face or at least get some fresh air. It's a good day for a good day. We all need a little sunshine. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 76-degrees | Night: 42-degrees
The mint is hanging in there for some reason this year. Usually by now it has just turned and I'm cutting it all out. This year it looks pretty darn good. I don't think I did anything differently. Oh well, another conundrum. The life of an urban gardener. The funny part about growing mint is I only grow it for Mint Juleps and usually only drink them on Kentucky Derby Day. Occasionally, I put some in iced tea but that's about it. It does smell good! I've been working on some projects not related to gardening these past few days. Work that harkens back to another life. I used to love doing this work but now it feels like, well, work! I must admit I have been a bit crabby about it. Here's the rub. I said yes because it is something I believe in. I want to do a good job and honor the organizations I'm working with. But it's not my passion anymore. I don't like the pressures of deadlines and last-minute changes or waiting for people to make up their minds before I can do my job. It reminds me too much of, well, WORK! I'm an old, retired Gardener now. I need time to think and weed and plan and water and weed and prune and weed. You get the idea. I love this chapter of my life. Just like the season of Fall. I'm in the Fall season of life. I like the colors and crunch. I like the cooler temperatures and the slower pace. I can sympathize with the falling leaves as my limbs creak about each morning. I love Fall. I'm looking forward to getting back to my life soon. Maybe I won't be so crabby! It's another beautiful day here in the Carondelet Garden. We can expect abundant sunshine with light and variable winds. Simply stunning! I'm going to take more breaks today to get outside and enjoy it! I hope you can as well. I know it helps relieve some of my crabbiness. I'm sure the Doodle Dog and Dr. B will appreciate it. Be good to yourself. Be kind to yourself and others as you journey about on this first Tuesday in October! It's Fall after all. Fall is my favorite color! That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 75-degrees | Night: 40-degrees
It's beginning to feel a bit like the movie Groundhog Day around here. One beautiful, sunny day after the other. Not complaining! Although, we could use a bit of rain. Gardeners are never completely satisfied! We have begun winterizing some of the potted plants. The Chinese Money Plants have been cleaned up and given a haircut and quarantined to bring into the house for the winter. We will be doing the same to our tropical Hibiscus as well as a couple of our hanging baskets that have become total favorites this year. We are going to try to over-Winter them with grow lights. Wish us luck! Plentiful sunshine with winds out of the ENE at 5 to 10 MPH. Just a beautiful morning out in the Carondelet Garden this morning. I hope you have an amazing week. Be good and kind to yourself. Smile a little. Enjoy this Fall weather. It's a game changer for your mood. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 78-degrees | 48-degrees
Chilly, stunning Sunday morning coming down in Carondelet. The last Coneflower is showing her lovely face toward the rising sun, and you just know it's going to be a good day in the Garden. There's work to be done, but it's the day of rest so I'm resting. I'm also making plans to do a whole bunch of things this week. The world can feel a bit upside down right now. The upcoming elections, the turmoil of politics and the sad state of crime, guns and scary driving around us. How do you make sense of it all? How do you make sense of a world that feels stranger than fiction? For a moment at least, I turn off the news and head outside and sit in the Kailyard and pull weeds. I pull weeds until I feel a bit better. It doesn't change the outside world. It does change me. It changes my world for just a little while. I change the things I can. It's another stunning Sunday morning. Sunny skies with winds out of the NNE at 5 to 10 MPH. A beautiful day to rest and recharge before the first full week of October is upon us. The newspaper has arrived. Coffee is made. Classical Music is on the Smart Speaker and, for a moment, all is right with my little part of South Saint Louis. That's a pretty good start. I hope all is right in your little part of the world. I hope you can get a bit of rest this first Sunday in October. Be kind to yourself today. You deserve it! That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden. |
