It's the season of change. The Holly berries are bright red and beautiful against the green leaves. It reminds us that Winter is just around the corner. The weather forecast gives us the same information. The first big freeze should happen this weekend. After these last few beautiful days it will be quite a shock to the system of this old man. We've enjoyed some day trips this week. We headed down to Kimmswick to pick up more Tea and Coffee and to visit The Dough Depot for an amazing lunch. The weather yesterday was absolutely beautiful. The Doodle Dog loves to travel, and she enjoyed all the extra attention. We can expect some changes to the weather tomorrow but today is going to be another stunning Southside day. We can expect abundant sunshine with winds out of the SSE at 10 to 15 MPH. Get out and enjoy some of this lovely weather while you have it! It's a good day for a good day. Be good and be kind to yourself and others as you sojourn through this Thursday. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden.

It's another beautiful Wednesday here in the Carondelet Garden in South Saint Louis. We were on our usual morning walkabout when we noticed this single red leaf on the sidewalk. A single, lone leaf against the backdrop of bare concrete. It was simply striking in its simplicity and beauty. The day after an election is always a mixed bag of emotions. Some wins. Some losses. Sometimes I feel like that lone leaf. Then the winds blow, and others fall and join me on the concrete, and I realize I'm not alone. No matter which side of the aisle we may choose, we are never alone. We have our little community to support us when we win or when we lose. That gives us hope. Add in a bit of faith and the ability to love and we are able to face anything. Keep the Faith! Have hope and share some love today. We can expect plentiful sunshine this Humpday Wednesday in November. The winds are out of the SSE at 5 to 10 MPH. It's the perfect day for a little faith, hope and love to carry us through. That's all the news from here the Carondelet Garden. Day: 64-degrees | Night: 49-degrees
It's Election Day here in the City of Saint Louis. Today is the day we get to exercise our right to vote as citizens of this Country, this State and this City. It's important to make sure your voice is heard. Your vote is important. We need leadership now more than ever and this is our opportunity to let our voice be heard. If you haven't yet, please stop and vote today. The Red Clover that I planted as a cover crop for the Winter is doing pretty well. The squirrels seem to love it! I have no idea why? But they are driving the little Doodle Dog crazy. It's fun to watch to say the least. It's a cloudy Tuesday morning on this Election Day in South Saint Louis. The winds are out of the East at 5 to 10 MPH. Be good to yourself. Do yourself a favor and get out and exercise your right to vote today. It's a duty and a privilege. You'll be glad you did! That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden. Day: 62-degrees | Night: 45-degrees
Another simply stunning morning here in the Carondelet Garden on the southside of the City of Saint Louis. One more day until Election Day! I hope you get the chance to get out and vote. It's so important, especially right now. Never in my lifetime have I seen such a need for genuine leadership. Please vote! Local elections are more important than ever. It's been a very busy weekend for this old gardener and Dr. B. The Doodle Dog has been feeling a bit left out as we are heading into the world a bit more lately. We've enjoyed visiting with friends and seeing Basketball in person again. Live music is such a part of our soul, so that has been a true pleasure as well. We need community right now. We need our people to support us. We need to support our people as well. It's good for our souls! The sun is shining brightly in the skies and that is good for our soul as well. The winds are out of the NE at 10 to 15 MPH. It's still a bit gusty out there this morning. I hope you have an amazing week. Be good to yourself. Be kind to those you meet on your journey this week. We all deserve a bit of kindness. That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden. Day: 71-degrees | Night: 45-degrees
It is a beautiful morning here in the Carondelet Garden in South Saint Louis. It's also a quiet morning. Sometimes that is exactly what you need: quiet. It gives the mind a bit of white space to simply rest. You can call it mindfulness or spirituality or prayer but sometimes you need silence to recalibrate and center yourself a bit. Today, I wish you quiet. It's a beautiful Fall Day here on the southside. Plentiful sunshine with winds out of the South at 5 to 10 MPH. Grab another cup of coffee or tea. Sit back and relax a bit if you can. You deserve a bit of relaxation. Be good to yourself. Be good and kind to those around you. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 57-degrees | Night: 43-degrees
Happy Saturday Gardening Friends! We decided to plant Red Clover for our cover plantings this year. It is looking so good. We are quite pleased with the results. We will, of course, know more next Spring but you can't argue with the beauty of this green manure! Today is a Scratchy Saturday for this old man. The 16-year-old got his first newish car and, of course, has already scraped up the front bumper of the car. It's a rite of passage for every young driver. His Dad was not pleased. He and I talked about it, and I offered to take a look. We buffed almost everything out, but a few scrapes went a bit deep. I told him what to do and he went to the dealership himself. Purchased the correct touch-up paint and we are going to fix the rest today. It should look pretty close to brand new by the time we are done. Sometimes, old guys come in handy. We've done this a few times. Yes, I was young once as well and I'm old enough to smile through it. Mistakes happen. It's how we learn from them. How we react to them. That's what counts! I was proud of his maturity and the attitude. He took full responsibility. He didn't try to blame anyone but himself. He wouldn't even take any money to buy anything. He insisted on paying for it himself. It gives me more than a little hope in the future knowing this young man! The winds of change are sure blowing around the Carondelet Garden this morning. The Wind Advisory is still in effect. The skies are cloudy with a slight chance of rain shower. The winds are out of the WSW at 20 to 30 MPH with some bigger gusts! Be careful driving around today. Be good to yourself today. Be kind to yourself and those around you. Have a little hope! It's not as bad as it looks sometimes. Sometimes a little elbow grease and bit of touch-up paint can fix it up. That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 79-degrees | Night: 56-degrees
Last Spring, we were lucky enough to visit some great Gardens in Saint Louis through the Sustainable Backyard Tour @sbytour (www.sustainablebackyard.org). One of the great gardens we visited was @stl_stead and it was very inspiring. We talked about Garlic, and she recommended Music Garlic and so this year that's what I planted. It's only been a short time, and this is what's growing in my bed right now. I'm so excited and grateful for the expertise and sharing of knowledge. The gardeners of Instagram are an amazing bunch of gifted people who are so giving of their time and knowledge. Thanks again @stl_stead for sharing! It's been a good week for this old gardener and Dr. B and tonight the fun continues. We are heading to @Jazzstl to see one of our favorite performers: John Pizzarelli. Mr. Pizzarelli is a world class jazz guitar virtuoso and the son of Bucky Pizzarelli who some of you may know from the old Tonight Show band. Bucky was the guitarist and an amazing talent as well. So excited to see Mr. Pizzarelli again and hear some of the best of the Great American Songbook. We are under a Wind Advisory so batten everything down thar she blows! We should see a mix of clouds and sunshine today with winds out of the South at 10 to 20 MPH with gusts as high as 50 MPH. Be careful if you are driving around today! Happy Weekend Eve everyone! Be good to yourself. Be kind to yourself and those around you. We all need it right now! That's all the news from the Carondelet Garden. Day: 76-degrees | Night: 62-degrees
It's a beautiful morning here in the Carondelet Garden. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the City is quiet for now. The newspapers have arrived, the Doodle has been taken care of and it's time to sit down and stop for a few minutes. It's important to take a few minutes every morning to just be. Contemplation? Meditation? Whatever works. Let things stop for a little while. Blank space for the mind. The weather is perfect if you would like to sit outside for your morning Contemplation. A good deal of sunshine is on tap for this first Thursday of November. Winds are out of the South at 10 to 15 MPH. Another beautiful day in South Saint Louis today. Tonight is the first basketball game of the season for the Women's Billikens Basketball team. They take on Maryville and we are heading to the game. It's our first in a few years and we are excited! I hope you have a moment to stop and rest this Thursday. That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden. Day: 73-degrees | Night: 46-degrees
Today is a day of remembrance for those faithful departed. A Feast for All Souls! Many of us have lost someone dear to us this year. This is the perfect day to remember them. Maybe light a candle. Have a glass of wine tonight and toast their memory and pray for the ones they left behind. Maybe share a funny story or a favorite memory. I'm not sure grief ever truly goes away; it just changes into something else. That's actually a good thing. It keeps memories and traditions alive. It reminds us of who we are and where we come from. Fall is that time of change. Today is a day of remembering. The skies are clear, and the sun is beginning to break through. Winds are out of the SSW at 5 to 10 MPH. I hope you have a chance to get outside and witness the changes around us. The leaves are still pretty stunning and remind us that change is good. Be good to yourself and others as you journey through your day. It's a Feast for All Souls! That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden. Day: 72-degrees | Night: 46-degrees
Happy Feast of All Hallows or All Hallows' Day. Some also refer to today as All Saints' Day, The Fest of All Saints, the Solemnity of All Saints and Hallowmas. Today is the day we celebrate and honor all the saints of the church, whether they are known or unknown. A great day to remember those who we loved and lost. This time of year is the time of Thin Places. Thin Places or Sacred Places gives us an opportunity to walk in two worlds at the same time. I love this idea from Celtic Spirituality as it is deeply connected to the natural world and reminds us that every aspect of our lives is infused with the presence of the Divine. The Celts viewed this time in the cycle of the year as a time where the veil between this world and the spiritual becomes thinner. Today is a day to journey out into creation and be drawn closer to all that is Sacred. Today is the perfect day to journey out into creation and find your Thin Place. The sun is shining and the winds are light and variable. A good day to remember. A good day to reflect. A good day to renew. Happy Feast of All Hallows! |
